But don't get too excited yet. This latest offering from Lucasfilm Studios follows the Saga's trend for not showing us events in any kind of sequential order. This CGI version will take place in-between Episodes 2 and 3, following the events of the Clone Wars.

Lucas has been very careful to advise his legions of fans that he'll never take Star Wars beyond the Skywalker's story:

"It's been covered in the books and video games and comic books, which are things I think are incredibly creative but that I don't really have anything to do with other than being the person who built the sandbox they're playing in." said the 63-year old filmmaker.

"I get asked all the time, 'What happens after "Return of the Jedi"?,' and there really is no answer for that," he said. "The movies were the story of Anakin Skywalker and Luke Skywalker, and when Luke saves the galaxy and redeems his father, that's where that story ends."

Of course, the CGI Clone Wars does follow in the greatest Star Wars tradition of all - self-advertising and merchandising. This latest addition to the canon is a device that'll lead fans into the forthcoming animated TV series that's been grinding in the rumour mill for a long, long time. Some of the cast of the newest trilogy will be lending their voices to the computer generated characters, but it's got to be a tad depressing knowing all the events are going to take place in such a restricted arena.

Slated for a release this August, MDN will keep you updated on this latest addition to the increasingly watered down franchise.

By the way, it might be worth noting this is, in fact, film number eight. Although George might try to forget it, and have worked hard to remove all traces of it from history, the Star Wars Holiday Special is still around. This TV only movie was shown after the original Star Wars film release and before Empire Strikes Back - famous for being utterly god awful and for featuring the first on-screen appearance of Bob Fett. Keep an eye on MDN for more info of the Episode George has tried to forget...
